Dear students and parents/guardians,
I want to welcome everyone back and I hope both my students and their parents/guardians had a great summer. This years physical education class will consist of many fun and exciting activities/games that will promote teamwork, leadership, cooperation, physical fitness, and skills needed to develop the students into being self sufficient lifelong learners. I plan to incorporate games such as basketball, kickball, and floor hockey among other things to promote the skills listed above.
Some information that parents/guardians might be interested in are as followed-
1. Students should be dressed for class in a solid color tee shirt or polo shirt or any Spartan shirt. Shorts are allowed to be worn for P.E. class until daylight savings time. After that the students will need to wear athletic pants such as sweatpants or jogging pants or khakis. Both the shorts and pants can have logos on them this year for P.E. class but try to have them as small as possible. Sneakers are also a must for Physical Education.
2. Students should show either a doctors note or note from their parents/guardian pertaining to the physical health of the student (ie: if the student can't participate in P.E. due to a broken arm, sickness, injury, ect.)
3. Many different avenues will be used for grading the students such as skill tests, pencil and paper assessments, participation, and sportsmanship.
I will use this means of communication to post every unit of instruction I will be teaching and also for listing homework if necessary. I look forward to a exciting productive year at North Schuylkill Elementary School. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns feel free to send me an email at (thinkel@northschuylkill.net) and I will get back to you as soon as I can.
Thank you,
Mr. Hinkel (NSE Health and Physical Education Teacher)

Container Ball and Ships are Sinking
3-6th Grade
This week we will be playing one of the student's favorite games, Container Ball. This game is a action packed game that uses previously learned skills. The students will be broken up into two large teams. The object of the game is to get as many dodge balls as they can into the container on the opposite side of the gymnasium. The way they can get the balls into the container is either by throwing from their side or running onto the opposing teams side to toss it in. If they cross onto the opposing team's side they can be tagged with a dodge ball causing them to go into "jail". If they are in jail they can have a teammate throw them a ball, which they then have to catch it, in order to be freed. Once they are free they can either run back to their side or try to make a shot into the container. We will play timed rounds and then count the dodge balls in the containers.
K-2nd Grade
The students will use previously learned skills such as dodging, fleeing, skipping, running, and gallopping in this action packed game. This game is called "Ships are Sinking". There will be a couple taggers to start out, who we call the sharks. I will call out "ships are sinking" and students will use different locomotor movements to get from one mat to another without being tagged by the sharks. If they are tagged then they become a shark. We will play different timed rounds for this game.

Volleyball Skills/Games
The next two weeks we will be diving into our volleyball unit. The students (K-6) will be learning volleyball skills such as bumping, setting, and serving. They will also be engaged in competitive activities that highlight the skills developed such as serving competition and one bounce games. Adaptations such as softer, bigger, and lighter volleyballs will be used to make accommodations for all skill levels.
